The Right to Die with Dignity

***WARNING! The following post is about the right to die. It may be disturbing for some of you, so my suggestion is — don’t read it.

In case you don’t know, a terminally ill woman in San Diego asked a judge for “permission” to take her own life and her request is being dismissed. Currently 5 states : Oregon, Washington, Vermont, New Mexico and Montana allow assisted suicide for terminally ill patients… California (which pretends to be the most progressive state in the union) does not.

For those of you who don’t know my story I will briefly explain: I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer over 4 years ago which for most people is a terminal prognosis. I won’t sugar coat my experience; I went through fucking hell! For a moment I wasn’t sure if I would make it, so “I” decided I would take my own life if my QUALITY OF LIFE was not how I wanted to live. My family never knew. Why? Because it is none of their business! This is MY life and I DO NOT need PERMISSION from ANYONE, especially a judge or the state!

I am healthy now thanks to my doctors and MY efforts to get well. I know there will come a time when I will die. Its part of the lifecycle. If I get sick from something that will make my quality of life miserable, I will take my life while I still feel good enough and am strong enough to do it myself. I REPEAT, I DO NOT NEED PERMISSION from anyone to make that decision.

As for any right-to-lifers, I say mind your own business and keep your own house in order. If you want to suffer and think you’ll get a front row seat in heaven for doing so — be my guest. My life choices are none of your business and YOUR life choices are none of mine.

This is MY opinion based on how I CHOOSE to live MY life. You definitely get to choose how you want to live yours.

Be well,

Inge
