Living in the Now

I try very hard to meditiate daily and I am pretty good about it. My favorite daily meditation is Zen because I want to practise living in the moment. I emphasize the word practice because it takes a lot of practise to stay in the moment throughout my day and that includes meditating. I am constantly wrestling with my monkey brain over which one will rule my thoughts and my monkey brain wins a lot of rounds. But I’m no  quitter so I keep getting back in the ring, determined to win the match.

For example, I just finished meditating for 20 minutes and I’ll give you a glimpse of what it’s like inside my head…

Breathe in…breathe out…breathe in… breath out…I hear planes going by and a crow…I’m happy Spring is early this year…breathe in…breathe out…is Lily (my cat) on the kitchen counter? I heard her jump up there. I know she’s trying to steal a cookie off the cookie sheet…(I get up and find her on the counter and put her in another room — close door) Breathe in…breathe out…breathe in…there’s sure a lot of small planes flying around today…breathe in…breathe out…(birds chirping) (people talking nearby)…fly brother fly…hope you meet your maker (lyrics from Kula Shaker song)…stay in the moment…breathe in…breathe out

See what I mean? — total monkey brain!  You can imagine how the rest of my day goes. But it’s not just me — it’s you, the guy sitting next to you at work, the woman serving you coffeee at your favorite diner — it’s all of us humans. The difference is most of us don’t realize that out moneky brains are the ones running our show. Zen Meditation helps us stop and hear what our thoughts are thinking and that we are spending too much time in the past and future. We are missing out on the present…which is constantly changing. The words I just typed are already in the past and by the time you read this, I will be on to other adventures — including practising to stay in the present moment. Trippy stuff, if you really think about it.
